Every year, India celebrates Independence Day to remember the day the country became free.

This year, people in ASR district got together to celebrate the 80th one.

The head of the district, District Collector T. Nishanthi, raised the national flag.

Police officers marched and gave the flag a salute.

Government departments made colourful displays, called tableaux, showing their work.

The Health Department's display won the first prize.

Children from many schools sang and danced in patriotic cultural programmes.

A school called GTWA School, Pedagaruvu, won the first prize for their performance.

The District Collector gave special honours to the families of freedom fighters who helped India become free.

She also gave certificates and mementoes to 190 workers who had done a great job.

A police dog squad showed off its trained tricks, and everyone clapped.
