Kolkata Metro has started testing trains on a new part of its Orange Line.

This section runs between Beleghata and the IT Centre and is 3.5 kilometres long.

The first test also began checks of a computer-based system that helps control trains and their movement.

Work had been held up for months at Chingrighata Crossing because police clearance was disputed.

The work was completed in stages after permission was granted.

When the extension is ready for passengers, it is expected to connect Salt Lake Sector V with Garia.

The Orange Line is also planned to extend closer to New Town and eventually to the airport.

The line currently runs between Kavi Subhash and Beleghata.
