Sion ROB Reconstruction Milestone: 500-Tonne Girders Successfully Launched
Workers are building a new bridge in Mumbai called the Sion Road Over Bridge.
The old bridge was closed, so a new one is being built.
The hardest part was putting two giant steel beams, called girders, over the railway tracks below where trains still run.
Each girder weighs about 500 tonnes, which is heavier than many elephants.
The workers did this at night, when fewer trains run, to keep passengers safe.
They finished placing both giant girders in just two days.
The new bridge is wider than the old one so more railway lines can be added underneath.
The steel was made in Nagpur and put together near the site.
When it is finished, the bridge will help cars and buses cross between the Eastern Express Highway, LBS Road and Dharavi Road.
This work is part of a bigger project to make Mumbai's railway system better.
Central Railway completed the launching of both 500-tonne main girders of the reconstructed Sion Road Over Bridge within two days.
The second girder was launched during a specially planned three-hour night corridor block between Matunga and Kurla over the operational railway corridor.
Each girder weighs approximately 500 tonnes with an overall span of about 54.5 metres.
The reconstruction is part of the CSMT–Kurla 5th and 6th line project, one of Mumbai's major railway capacity enhancement projects.
The project has entered the next phase of deck slab construction, road approaches, road surfacing and crash barriers, and will restore connectivity between the Eastern Express Highway, LBS Road and Dharavi Road.
