Kannada Inscription at Jeur Temple Sheds Light on Medieval History
A very old stone with writing on it was found at a temple in a village in India.
People think it is from around 800 years ago, in the 1200s.
The stone is broken, so only part of the writing remains.
On the top part, there are drawings of a Shiva Linga, a cow, the Sun and Moon, and a sword.
The writing is in a language called Kannada.
It starts with a prayer to Lord Shiva.
The prayer comes from a famous old book called the Harshacharita.
Because the stone is broken, scientists cannot be sure exactly when it was made.
They think it might mention a royal family called the Yadava dynasty.
This find helps us learn more about the history of that time.
A partially damaged Kannada stone inscription was discovered at the Kashiling (Mahadev) Temple in Jeur village, Akkalkot tehsil.
Researchers tentatively date the inscription to the 13th century, possibly linked to the Yadava dynasty, though the dating remains provisional.
The surviving upper portion of the slab bears engravings of a Shiva Linga, a cow, the Sun and Moon, and a sword.
The text begins with a Sanskrit invocation to Lord Shiva, identified as a verse from Banabhatta's Harshacharita.
The slab measures 28 cm in length and 16.5 cm in height; the reading was prepared by Karnataka History Academy President Dr Devarakonda Reddy.
