PM Modi Vows 5-8 New Chip Plants in 7-8 Years
India's leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made a big announcement on August 15, the day India celebrates Independence Day.
He said India will build five to eight new chip plants in the next seven to eight years.
Chips are tiny electronic parts used in phones, computers and cars.
India already has three chip factories up and running.
Those factories are in Sanand, in the state of Gujarat.
They are run by companies named Micron, Kaynes and CG Semi.
The government has also approved 12 chip projects and a new plan called Semicon 2.0 to help make more chips in India.
This helps India make more things by itself instead of depending on other countries.
Some details about the new plants, like where they will be built, have not been shared yet.

Three semiconductor facilities — Micron, Kaynes and CG Semi — have already begun commercial production in Sanand, Gujarat.
Twelve manufacturing projects have been approved under the first India Semiconductor Mission with investments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore.
The government approved Semicon 2.0 in July with an outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore; details on the new plants are yet to be disclosed.
