India builds domestic semiconductor and AI capabilities with major investments
Semiconductors are tiny parts inside phones, cars, and computers that help them think and work.
They are like the brains of modern machines.
Making them is really hard, and only a few countries can do it.
India wants to make its own chips instead of buying them from other countries.
It has already made seven chips, including some very advanced ones.
India has approved twelve big projects to build factories for these chips.
Three of those factories have already started making products.
India is also helping people who study artificial intelligence, which means smart computer programs.
It now has more than 45,000 powerful computer parts, called GPUs, that researchers can use.
This helps Indian inventors build cool new technology at a lower cost.
India has successfully fabricated seven chips at various nodes, including advanced nodes such as 12 nm.
India approved 12 semiconductor projects across six states with investment commitments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore.
Three semiconductor facilities have already commenced commercial production.
A total of 211 chips were taped out by 75 institutions by April 2026.
The IndiaAI Mission expanded shared compute capacity to more than 45,000 GPUs, with 237 projects accessing subsidised AI computing covering 93.18 lakh GPU hours.
