Ujjain May Sit on 2,200-Year-Old Stupa Bigger Than Sanchi

In the city of Ujjain in India, there is a big hill called Vaishya Tekri.

A long time ago, people built a Buddhist stupa there — a stupa is a tall, dome-shaped building that reminds people of Buddha.

Some experts think this hill may hide the biggest stupa ever found, even bigger than the famous one at Sanchi.

About 90 years ago, diggers started to explore the hill and found a huge round building and two smaller ones.

The dig had to stop suddenly because a strange gas made some workers faint.

After that, no one dug there for almost 90 years.

Now, the state government wants to dig again and find out what is really inside.

Some stories say the great king Ashoka, who once ruled from Ujjain, helped build it.

But the experts say we can only be sure after a careful dig.

They also need to buy the land, which costs a lot of money — about 40 crore rupees.
