Mumbai BMC Destroys 48,166 Kilograms of Seized Meat
Mumbai’s civic authorities checked places where meat was slaughtered, transported, and sold.
They seized and destroyed 48,166 kilograms of meat during the year from April 2025 to March 2026.
Most of it was bovine meat, including meat suspected of coming from prohibited or unauthorised slaughter.
Officials also seized nearly 60,000 live animals, mostly hens.
Some seizures happened because meat was handled or stored in unhygienic conditions.
The BMC worked with the Mumbai Police in several cases.
At least 524 people were arrested and fines were collected.
Seized animals were either placed under court orders or auctioned.
Meat considered unsafe was treated with chemicals and buried so people could not eat it.
The BMC seized and destroyed 48,166 kilograms of meat in Mumbai between April 2025 and March 2026.
Bovine meat accounted for 43,498 kilograms, or about 90% of the total seized.
Authorities also seized 59,965 live animals, mainly hens, in cases involving illegal slaughter or unauthorised sales.
At least 524 people were arrested, while offenders paid Rs 13.08 lakh in fines.
The BMC auctioned seized livestock for Rs 51.51 lakh, while overall meat seizures fell slightly from the previous year.
