Hyderabad Panel Report Ready, Cabinet to Decide GO 111 Repeal
A long time ago, the government made a rule called GO 111 that stopped people from building too much near two big lakes that give water to the city of Hyderabad.
Some people did not like this rule because they felt it was stopping the city from growing.
In May 2023, the old government decided to remove this rule so that building could happen in 84 villages.
But other people took the matter to court because they worried about the environment and the lakes.
The court said the rule had to stay for now.
A group of experts was asked to study the issue and write a report.
Meanwhile, a new government came in and also waited for the report before making a decision.
Now the experts have finished their report.
The leaders of the state will soon meet to decide what to do next.
The BRS Cabinet decided on May 18, 2023 to repeal GO 111 and apply GHMC-era land-use regulations to 84 villages.
The repeal was challenged in the Telangana High Court and was never implemented.
In September 2023, the BRS government assured the court that GO 111 would remain in force until an expert committee submitted its report.
Petitioners were divided: some sought to keep GO 111 for environmental protection, while others sought repeal since the reservoirs now supply less than 1.25% of Hyderabad's drinking water.
The Congress government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy kept the repeal on hold pending a high-power committee report, which is now ready.
