Godavari Water Reaches North Andhra Through Polavaram Left Canal
Andhra Pradesh is preparing to bring Godavari River water to North Andhra through a large canal.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is expected to release the water on Wednesday.
The canal will first help farms in four districts and provide drinking water to many people.
It is designed to support irrigation across about 2.87 lakh acres at the initial stage.
The canal is 213 kilometres long and crosses several rivers, roads and railway lines.
Engineers built special bridges, tunnels and underground passages to move the water safely.
The project has also involved settling a land dispute and relocating 472 families.
Officials hope to connect the canal to another project so water can eventually reach eight lakh acres.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to release Godavari water into the Polavaram Left Main Canal on Wednesday.
The canal’s initial supply is expected to support irrigation across 2.87 lakh acres and drinking water for 5.23 lakh people in four districts.
The 213-kilometre canal has cost about Rs 4,192 crore so far and crosses five major river systems.
Engineers built siphons and aqueducts, including a 447-metre structure across the Tandava River with six vents.
The government plans to link the canal with the Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi project to serve up to eight lakh acres in North Andhra.
