India's Economy: From Rs 2.7 Lakh Crore to $4 Trillion
Seventy-nine years ago, India became independent and was very poor.
The country had almost no electricity, very few people could read, and people did not live very long.
Today, India is a much richer country with a very big economy worth about four trillion dollars.
The change happened because India opened up to the rest of the world and started using computers and mobile phones.
Almost everyone in India can now use the internet, and many people make payments with their phones.
More children go to school, and people now live about forty years longer than they used to.
India's population has also grown a lot, from about 36 crore people to about 146 crore.
India still has big challenges, like creating jobs for all its people and making sure everyone shares in the new wealth.
The country needs to keep growing very fast for a long time to become a rich country by 2047.
India's GDP has grown from about Rs 2.7 lakh crore at Independence in 1947 to an estimated $3.96 trillion in 2025, with GDP per capita of about $2,702.5, according to the World Bank.
Foreign exchange reserves rose to a four-month high of $707 billion in the week ended August 7, 2026, the biggest weekly jump since January, per Reserve Bank of India data.
Electricity generating capacity climbed from just 1,362 MW in 1947 to about 556.9 GW by March 2025, while per-capita consumption rose from 16.3 units to about 1,400 units.
Internet subscriptions reached 1,092.79 million by March 2026, and UPI processed 24,161.69 crore transactions in FY2025-26, according to NPCI data.
Literacy rose from 18.33 per cent in 1951 to about 80.9 per cent, life expectancy increased from about 32 years to 72 years, and population grew from 36.1 crore to about 1.46 billion.
