India Plans Agentic AI Payments Through Popular UPI Network
India is planning a new way for computer programs called AI agents to make some UPI payments.
Instead of asking a person every time, an agent could follow rules set by that person.
Early examples may include buying groceries or using discounts.
People could set limits on how much and when the agent can spend.
The plan may use two existing UPI features called UPI Circle and Reserve Pay.
Reserve Pay can hold money for several payments, although banks currently limit those blocks to ₹10,000 for up to 90 days.
NPCI may provide tools with spending limits, records of payments and identity checks.
The plan could make India one of the first countries with nationwide infrastructure for these kinds of payments, but the details are not final.
India is reportedly preparing a framework allowing AI agents to make low-value UPI payments without approval for every transaction.
The Unified Agent Protocol may be unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai next week, according to three anonymous sources.
Early uses could include frequent grocery purchases, discount-based orders and investments governed by preset price limits.
The system may use UPI Circle and Reserve Pay, with spending caps, audit trails, identity checks and a liability framework.
Mastercard, Visa and Pine Labs are also developing agentic payment capabilities, while NPCI has not commented on the reported plan.
