Independence Day 2026: What One Rupee Buys Today vs 1947
On August 15, 1947, the same day India became independent, one rupee could buy about 8 kilograms of rice, or about 8 litres of milk.
Today, the very same one-rupee coin can only buy about 30 grams of rice — a tiny handful.
Milk is also much costlier now, and one rupee buys only about a spoonful.
Even petrol has become very expensive, with one rupee getting you less than 10 millilitres in Delhi.
The biggest difference is gold: in 1947 one rupee could buy a small piece of gold, but today it buys almost nothing.
That does not mean people were richer back then, because their pay was also much smaller.
Since 1947, India has grown a lot — with more jobs, factories, cities and technology.
So the humble one-rupee coin tells us two stories: prices have gone up, but India itself has changed and grown enormously.
On August 15, 1947, one rupee could buy about 8.3 kg of rice or 8.3 litres of milk, at roughly 12 paise per kg or litre.
In August 2026, the all-India average retail rice price is about Rs 33 per kg, so one rupee buys only around 30 grams.
In Delhi, one rupee now buys less than 10 millilitres of petrol (about Rs 102 per litre) and only 14-15 millilitres of milk (about Rs 69 per litre).
At about Rs 88 per 10 grams in 1947, one rupee equalled roughly 0.11 grams of gold; on August 15, 2026, 24-carat gold in Delhi costs about Rs 1.48 lakh per 10 grams, so one rupee buys about 0.067 milligrams.
The article notes the comparison is approximate: wages were far lower in 1947, prices varied by region, and the rupee was then divided into 16 annas rather than decimal paise.
