India Energy Stack: UPI-like digital backbone for electricity trading
How India Energy Stack aims to turn power sector digital — like UPI for electricity · financialexpress.com

India is building something like a big digital helper for electricity.

You know how UPI lets people send money using their phones?

This new system, called the India Energy Stack, wants to do something similar for power.

It will let houses with solar panels on their roofs share extra electricity with neighbours.

If your house makes more solar power than it needs, you could sell it to the family next door and get paid.

The government has started trying this out in a few places like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

A company called REC Limited is helping run the test.

The plan also uses artificial intelligence to make better predictions about power.

But there are challenges, like old wires that may need fixing and worries about people's privacy.

If it works, India hopes to have a smarter, cleaner and more connected power system.

Representative of the Uttar Pradesh distribution company

“Just like UPI lets you transfer money directly between bank accounts, P2P lets you transfer ‘Energy Credits’ directly between homes. Your surplus solar energy powers your neighbor’s house, and you get paid for it directly on your bill.”
