Mumbai Suburban Railway Loses Riders as Metro Competition Grows

Mumbai’s suburban trains carried fewer people from April to June 2026 than during the same period last year.

The railway says Metro services may be competing with trains on some routes.

However, the data does not prove that all the missing train passengers moved to the Metro.

Regular Second Class and First Class travel both declined.

AC train travel increased by almost 30 percent.

Some stations near Metro routes, such as Mahalaxmi and Prabhadevi, saw especially large falls.

Western Railway wants to add more AC trains to keep and attract passengers.

A passenger association said trains also need better frequency and punctuality.

Mumbai commuters now have more choices for travelling across the city.
