Heavy Mumbai Rains Lift Water Reserves to 319 Days
It rained a lot in Mumbai on Thursday.
The rain came after a few dry days.
The eastern part of the city got the most rain.
The weather office said people in Thane should stay alert on Friday.
Rain fills the lakes that give Mumbai its water.
Right now, the lakes are about 90 per cent full.
That is a little more than they were at this time last year.
Mumbai now has enough water to last for 319 days.
Even so, the city will keep a small water-saving cut for now.
This helps make sure there is enough water for everyone.
Moderate to heavy showers continued across several parts of Mumbai on Thursday, with intermittent rainfall after a brief dry spell earlier in the week.
The eastern suburbs recorded the highest average rainfall at 16.50 mm between 8 am and 6 pm, followed by the western suburbs at 13.75 mm and Mumbai city at 11.74 mm.
The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Thane on Friday, while no weather alert was issued for Mumbai and Palghar for the next three days.
Water stock in Mumbai's seven supply lakes rose to 13.06 lakh million litres, around 90 per cent of required capacity, marginally higher than 12.91 lakh million litres recorded on the same date last year.
Mumbai's water reserves are now estimated to last for 319 days, although a 10 per cent water cut imposed from May 15 remains in place.
