Mumbai’s 27-Km Nariman Point Loop Anchors Wider Ring-Road Network
Mumbai plans to build a group of connected roads shaped like rings.
The first and smallest ring would be about 27 kilometers long.
It would start and end near Nariman Point.
Some parts, such as the Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway, are already open.
Other important connections are still being built.
When the missing links are finished, drivers could use the loop instead of crowded central roads.
Larger rings could later connect more parts of Mumbai, Thane and nearby areas.
The plan was introduced by MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee in 2024.
Mumbai’s planned 27-km inner loop will connect Nariman Point through several major road corridors.
The route relies on the Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway, along with links still under construction.
Nine larger proposed rings would extend across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region with lengths up to 273.5 km.
The network would connect roads, sea links, tunnels and elevated corridors across Mumbai and neighboring areas.
The ring-road strategy aims to provide alternative east-west and orbital routes around congested north-south corridors.
