Mumbai’s Six Carsheds Get ₹199 Crore Upgrade for AC Trains
Mumbai is preparing for 238 new air-conditioned local trains.
Six railway maintenance centers, called carsheds, will be improved.
The work will cost about ₹199 crore.
Three carsheds are on Western Railway and three are on Central Railway.
These centers will maintain both AC and regular local trains.
Workers will check equipment such as brakes, wheels, doors, batteries and air-conditioning systems.
The improvements are planned to finish in 24 months.
New special depots are also planned at Bhiwri and Vangaon.
Until those depots are ready, the upgraded carsheds will help maintain the new trains.
Six suburban railway carsheds in Mumbai will be upgraded at an estimated cost of ₹199 crore.
The facilities are located at Mumbai Central, Kandivali, Virar, Kurla, Kalwa and Sanpada.
Western Railway’s upgrades are estimated at ₹159 crore, while Central Railway’s will cost about ₹40 crore.
The work is expected to be completed within 24 months and support AC, 12-coach and 15-coach non-AC trains.
The upgrades will bridge the gap until dedicated AC depots at Bhiwri and Vangaon are ready for 238 incoming trains.
