Modi urges big leap in defence manufacturing for India

India celebrates its Independence Day every year, when it remembers becoming a free country.

This year, India's leader, called the Prime Minister, gave an important speech from the Red Fort.

He said India should make its own defence items, like weapons, drones, and fast rockets, instead of buying them from other countries.

Making your own things is called being self-sufficient, and it makes a country stronger.

The Prime Minister also said India should sell its defence items to other countries.

Many years ago, India made very little of its own defence equipment, but now it makes a lot more.

The Defence Minister said many new military projects were approved to keep the armed forces modern.

Some people worry that some companies pretend their products are made in India when they are really from other countries.

That would be a problem for India's goal of making things itself.
