India Defence Production Quadruples, Advancing Self-Reliance: Rajnath Singh
India says it is making much more defence equipment inside the country than it did before.
Defence production reportedly increased about four times over the past decade.
Defence exports have also grown significantly.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said this is helping India become more self-reliant.
He wants the military to depend less on foreign suppliers for important equipment.
A new tank-maintenance project is being built in Jabalpur.
It will help repair and upgrade T-72 and T-90 tanks.
The facility is expected to overhaul 80 tanks each year for the Indian Army.
India’s defence production rose from Rs 46,000 crore in 2014 to around Rs 1.80 lakh crore in 2026, Rajnath Singh said.
Defence exports reached approximately Rs 39,000 crore, compared with less than Rs 1,000 crore earlier.
Singh laid the foundation stone for a Rs 472 crore T-Series tank overhaul project in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The project will create facilities to overhaul T-72 and T-90 tanks, with an annual capacity of 80 tanks.
The Indian Army requires 230 tanks to be overhauled annually, while Vehicle Factory Avadi can currently overhaul 150.
