Southern Railway Chennai Division Crosses ₹5,000 Crore Earnings Milestone
Southern Railways’ Chennai division crosses ₹5,000 crore earnings milestone in FY26 · thehindubusinessline.com

The Chennai division of Southern Railway made a lot of money this year — more than ₹5,000 crore for the first time ever.

This amount comes from train ticket sales and payments companies make to move goods by train.

Almost 433 million people travelled on these trains, and the railway moved more than 11 million tonnes of goods.

The trains were usually on time, arriving on schedule 87 out of every 100 times.

When many people needed trains during busy periods, the railway ran 3,559 special trains and added extra coaches.

The railway is also building new things to make travel better.

A new train station is being built at Kilambakkam, and one platform is already finished.

Bigger tracks are being built between Chengalpattu and Arakkonam so more trains can run — up to 50 trains a day instead of 13.

The new tracks will be electric and designed for speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour.

This will help many people travel around Chennai and nearby towns more easily.
