Piyush Goyal: GeM rewrote rules of public procurement
The Government of India has a big online shop called the Government e-Marketplace, or GeM for short.
It helps government offices buy things they need, like supplies and services.
A minister named Piyush Goyal told everyone how well the shop has been doing.
Ten years ago, people bought things worth about 422 crore rupees through GeM.
Now, they buy things worth more than 1,55,000 crore rupees, which is a really, really big number.
Lots of small businesses are on GeM, including many run by women and many new startups.
This means small companies get a fair chance to sell to the government.
The minister said GeM has made buying faster, cheaper, and more honest.
It helps India become stronger and more self-reliant, and connects government offices with sellers all over the country.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said GeM's gross merchandise value grew from Rs 422 crore a decade ago to over Rs 1,55,000 crore today.
Over 12.28 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises, including more than 2.25 lakh women-led MSEs, are registered on GeM.
More than 42,000 startups are registered on the portal.
GeM connects over 1.37 lakh government buyer organisations with nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers.
GeM offers over 10,660 product categories and 350 service categories and was launched on August 9, 2016.
