Bahlil says Kaltim Prima Coal sought diesel import permit despite B50 policy

Indonesia says it no longer needs to import diesel because its B50 program blends diesel with up to 50% palm oil.

Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said Kaltim Prima Coal, a mining company owned by Bumi Resources, had again sought permission to import diesel for its operations.

He made the remark in Jakarta in front of Anindya Bakrie, a senior figure in the Bakrie Group, and joked that the company had not understood the policy.

Bahlil said Indonesia still imports about one million barrels of fuel a day because domestic crude oil production is far below demand.

The country also uses about 40 million kiloliters of gasoline each year but produces only 18 million to 19 million kiloliters.

The government plans to promote E50 gasoline, which would contain up to 50% ethanol made from crops such as sugar cane, cassava and corn.

Bahlil said the goal is to reduce reliance on imported fuel and support new economic growth areas.
