Indonesia’s agriculture minister alleges price manipulation in chicken and egg sales
Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, says parties he calls food “mafias” may be manipulating chicken and egg prices.
He raised the issue at a local inflation control meeting in Jakarta.
Amran said producers were receiving about 20,000 rupiah, below the 26,000 rupiah he said was expected, while consumers could pay 40,000 to 50,000 rupiah.
He pointed to protests by farmers over low farm prices even as consumers face higher prices.
He blamed middlemen for part of the gap, but the story does not establish that price manipulation has been proven.
Amran said he had written to the police chief and that 100 people had been arrested over alleged price manipulation, though he said this had not deterred it.
He said President Prabowo Subianto had ordered firm action, and Amran wants law enforcement to stop practices that he says hurt both farmers and consumers.

Andi Amran Sulaiman said producer prices were about Rp 20,000, compared with an expected Rp 26,000, while consumer prices reached Rp 40,000 to Rp 50,000.
He said the price gap pointed to problems in the distribution chain and called for action against middlemen.

What people are saying
This is an anomaly, sir. We need to convey this. Previously, if this was made the scapegoat, there was no stock. If there is no stock, prices rise. Now it is even more anomalous. Because those who own chickens, chicken and egg producers, protested yesterday because prices fell. They are devastated.
The price is Rp 20,000, for eggs and chicken today. It should be Rp 26,000. But at the end, Rp 40,000, Rp 50,000. These middlemen must be dealt with.
This is our country; if things continue like this, it is not right, Mr Home Affairs Minister. This must be done; this mafia must not be given room. So the producers are protesting, consumers are also protesting, both are protesting. So where are we? This is the government. Sorry, Mr Home Affairs Minister, we have written to the National Police Chief. This must be acted on.
One hundred have already been arrested, but they have not given up. Those manipulating this are our friends, big people. We are caught in the middle; on the same day consumers protested and producers protested.
