Man named suspect after disrupting church service with machete

Police in Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia, have named Aji Cahyono Putra a suspect over a disruption at a Protestant church service.

The incident happened at GKPI Rajeg on September 20, when a group demanded that the place of worship be closed and raised questions about its permit.

Aji allegedly carried a machete and helped force the service to stop.

A mediation meeting that evening ended in a reconciliation between the church and the group, but the police investigation continued.

Police named Aji a suspect on October 9 under provisions covering the violent disruption of religious gatherings or worship.

He has not been detained, with police citing his cooperation, local security concerns and requests from his lawyer and community leaders.

He must report to investigators every two days while the case proceeds.
