Wolff rejects claims Mercedes is favouring Antonelli over Russell
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has rejected claims that his team is favouring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell in the Formula 1 title fight.
He spoke in Singapore ahead of the Grand Prix after Russell’s engine failure in Malaysia forced him to retire from third place.
Antonelli leads Russell by 84 points, with seven races remaining.
Wolff called the accusations baseless and said Mercedes aims to give both drivers equal equipment and opportunities.
In Singapore, the drivers are using different car specifications so the team can assess an update that did not work as hoped in Malaysia.
Russell took second on the sprint qualifying grid, while Antonelli qualified seventh.
Mercedes says the split is for testing, and Wolff says the team will continue to let the drivers race.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff rejected claims that the team is favouring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell, calling the accusations “brainless” and “completely nonsensical.”
Russell retired from the Malaysian Grand Prix with a power unit failure, which left him 84 points behind championship leader Antonelli with seven races remaining.
The failure forced Russell to take an engine change and a grid penalty in Singapore; the reports differ on whether he would start from the back or had already qualified second for the sprint.
Mercedes ran different aerodynamic packages in Singapore: Russell used an older specification, while Antonelli kept the updated version so the team could compare them.
Wolff said Mercedes would give both drivers equal treatment and described the split packages as a performance evaluation, not a political decision.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
They’re brainless, whoever thinks that. I mean, it’s completely nonsensical.
Rather than watching Formula 1, they should do Teletubbies or, I don’t know, some Mickey Mouses.
We don’t know which one is going to be quicker. And so you take a decision and say, ‘Let’s try to find out’, and there is no political thinking behind it.
Even if now it’s more realistic for Kimi to win a championship in sheer mathematical probability, we would still give George the same opportunities.
