IMSS workers plan national march as officials prepare response
Medical workers at Mexico’s Social Security Institute, known as IMSS, are planning a national march for Oct.
14.
The march is set to begin at the main entrance of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center, and workers say a protest camp on Paseo de la Reforma will continue until their demands are addressed.
They want the removal of union leader Rafael Olivos and a special union congress with transparent elections.
They also oppose a 6.8% pay increase and are calling for a 10% overall raise, better retirement terms, and action on shortages of medical supplies and medicines.
A vote on the 6.8% increase is scheduled for Oct.
14, and workers say they want ballots and voting to be transparent.
Other groups, including teachers, transport workers, students and public-sector employees, are expected to join the march.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said IMSS director Zoé Robledo and Labor Secretary Marath Bolaños would hold a news conference later that day to discuss the issue.
