Sinaloa plans new prison after violence leaves 12 dead at Mazatlán facility

Mexico plans to build a new prison in Sinaloa after two violent clashes at the El Castillo facility in Mazatlán killed 12 people in less than 48 hours.

The dead included a child who was visiting, and the first clash also injured 16 people.

Authorities have not explained what caused the clashes.

Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said the new prison would have modern facilities and stronger security, but officials have not said where it will be or whether it will replace El Castillo.

The current Mazatlán facility has been reinforced with National Guard and prison-authority personnel.

The announcement comes as Sinaloa faces a long-running internal war within the Sinaloa Cartel, which has also affected prisons in the state.

The new prison is intended to strengthen control inside facilities and help reduce violence, but no construction date has been announced.
