Mexico suspends non-essential activities in four states as Hurricane Simón nears

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that non-essential activities would stop from 4 p.m.

on Saturday in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Nayarit.

The measure is in response to Hurricane Simón, which had reached Category 4.

The storm was forecast to make landfall early Sunday between the Jalisco municipalities of La Huerta and Tomatlán.

Sheinbaum urged people in risk areas to stay somewhere safe, avoid unnecessary travel and follow Civil Protection guidance.

The storm threatens the western states with strong winds, heavy rain and high waves.

The rain could cause flooding, landslides and rivers and streams to rise.

Authorities expect conditions to worsen as the storm approaches, but no further steps are specified.
