Sheinbaum seeks agreement with Jalisco over Guadalajara water crisis

People in the Guadalajara metropolitan area are facing problems with water quality.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says the federal government wants to help Jalisco address the crisis, not turn it into a political conflict.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus has proposed a financing model used for roads, but Sheinbaum says water systems are different, particularly in how they are operated.

She says officials need to agree on financing that does not lead to privatization of the water service.

Sheinbaum called for both urgent measures and a longer-term plan, and said talks with Jalisco would continue.

She also criticized the handling of protests in Guadalajara, saying the state government should explain why authorities used force.

The next step is for federal and state officials to keep negotiating how to address the problem.

What people are saying

We do not want this to become a political conflict between the government of the State of Jalisco and us, because the population is facing a problem and we want to help resolve it.

From our perspective, water is different because of what operation would entail.

What we have to do is resolve it through an agreement in which, first, we look at the emergency measures that need to be taken; and second, the long-term programme.
