Indonesia’s Central Bank Says Global Pressures Weakened the Rupiah
The rupiah weakened mainly because of pressures from abroad, according to Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti.
Some foreign investors moved money out of emerging markets and into assets they saw as safer, such as the US dollar.
Higher oil prices and greater demand for foreign currency from importers also added pressure.
A weaker rupiah can make imported goods more costly.
