Mobile nanogrid combines drone charging, launch and recovery

Sesame Solar, Target Arm and AG3 Labs have introduced the Persistent Drone Operations Nanogrid, a mobile power and drone system.

It is designed for military and other teams operating in remote or difficult conditions.

The nanogrid generates electricity and can charge and store drones, reducing the need for fuel resupply.

A robotic arm can launch and recover drones without a pilot on-site, including while the system is moving.

The system uses AG3 Labs’ configurable SPADE drone for tasks such as surveillance and communications relay.

The background is a power gap: the U.S. Army has said there is no standard way to deliver backup power to drone launch teams.

The system is offered alone or in groups of two to twelve, and can also charge portable batteries and other equipment.

What people are saying

Mobile electric power is a critical fifth supply requirement along with food, water, munitions, and fuel.

The launch and the recovery are two of the most exposed moments of a drone mission – someone standing in the open, waiting on an aircraft.

Operators shouldn’t need a different drone for every mission — they need one airframe they can reconfigure in the field and put up in numbers.
