Former Chongqing mayor Huang Qifan investigated over alleged corruption

China’s anti-graft watchdog is investigating former Chongqing mayor Huang Qifan over suspected violations of law and discipline, a phrase used for alleged corruption.

Huang is 74 and served as mayor of the southwestern city from 2010 to 2016.

He remained in office after his former boss Bo Xilai was purged in 2012, while Bo was later sentenced to life in prison for corruption and abuse of power.

Huang became known as an influential economic official and later worked as an adviser and commentator on finance and industry.

The investigation puts a prominent former official under scrutiny, but the watchdog has not announced a finding of guilt.

Huang could not be reached for comment, and it is unclear whether he has been allowed to retain a lawyer.

The sources do not say what steps in the investigation will follow.
