Event in Jiangxi marks 90 years since the Long March began

A commemorative event opened in Yudu, Jiangxi, on October 13, marking 90 years since the Red Army’s Long March began.

In autumn 1934, more than 86,000 soldiers crossed the Yudu River at night to start the journey.

Local residents built and repeatedly dismantled floating bridges from doors, floorboards and timber to help them cross unseen.

The river crossing became a defining moment in the Long March, and Yudu preserves sites and objects linked to it.

Visitors can walk a preserved 19.34-kilometre trail, visit a memorial museum and watch performances that recreate the departure.

The county is connecting remembrance with tourism, which drew more than 18 million visitors in 2025.

The event’s theme calls on each generation to carry forward its own “new Long March,” while Yudu also promotes its clothing industry and other local businesses.
