Xi sets priorities for China’s health system at national conference

At a national health conference in Beijing on October 12–13, Xi Jinping set priorities for China’s health system.

He said the 2026–2030 period is key to reaching China’s goal of becoming a “Healthy China” by 2035.

The plan calls for health needs to shape government policies and for more focus on preventing illness, including stronger disease controls and food safety.

It also calls for better medical services, with more care available close to where people live and improved support for people with long-term conditions.

Xi said reforms should improve coordination between hospitals, health insurance and medicines while keeping medical care affordable and public hospitals focused on public benefit.

Premier Li Qiang urged officials to put the priorities into practice, including improving access to care and health services for older people and children.
