Legal aid group urges Indonesia police to make complaint handling transparent

Legal aid group urges Indonesia police to make complaint handling transparent

Indonesia’s Community Legal Aid Institute, known as LBHM, wants the police to change how they handle public complaints.

The group says people should not have to make a case go viral online to get justice.

Indonesia’s new National Police Chief, Suyudi Ario Seto, pledged to address that problem after taking office on October 1, 2026.

LBHM says the police need a transparent system to record, check and act on every complaint, and to show its progress.

It also wants clear explanations when cases move forward or are stopped.

The group says reforms should include stronger oversight of police powers and judge success by fair, lawful case handling rather than the number of arrests or cases.

It also calls for inclusive procedures and access to legal aid for vulnerable groups, with changes carried out across police units throughout Indonesia.
