Former KPU chief says disputed election rule was discussed and approved

Former Indonesian election commission chief Hasyim Asy'ari says a disputed clause in the rules for presidential candidates was discussed at a parliamentary meeting in September 2023.

He was responding to Ahmad Doli Kurnia, who had said the clause was not discussed by the commission and parliament.

Hasyim says the commission sent parliament a draft regulation before the meeting, and the clause was included in the draft.

He says Doli, then head of parliament's Commission II, attended and signed the meeting's conclusions, along with other officials.

Hasyim rejects claims that the clause was secretly inserted or manipulated.

The dispute concerns a clause in the rules for the 2024 presidential election, and Hasyim says responsibility for it is shared by those who took part in the meeting.

He also urged the ethics council examining a complaint about the clause to act fairly, noting that the council had participated in the meeting and signed its conclusions.
