Kerala launches coir product campaign to revive traditional industry
People in Kerala have been making coir products, like mats, ropes, and brushes from coconut husks, for generations.
Many families earn their living by making these things.
Lately, fewer people have been buying coir, so workers have had less work and less money.
The Kerala government wants to help these families.
It is asking every household to buy at least one coir product for their home.
The campaign is called "A Coir Product in Every Home."
It starts during Onam, a big festival in Kerala, and will run for six months.
The government is also giving money to workers and to the cooperative societies that make coir products.
If many people buy coir, it can help a lot of families keep their jobs and keep an old tradition alive.
The Kerala government launched the campaign "A Coir Product in Every Home -- A Helping Hand for Coir," beginning this Onam season to revive the state's coir industry.
More than two lakh workers and about 743 cooperative societies depend on Kerala's coir industry, which has faced reduced sales due to changing consumer preferences, weaker demand, and limited product innovation.
The state-level launch will be held on August 9 at the Coir Corporation Auditorium, with the campaign continuing for six months from August 10.
The government proposed allocating Rs 1 crore to revive inactive coir spinning societies and to support workers through an Onam advance and an ex gratia payment of Rs 2,000.
The government initiated release of Rs 10.95 crore to cooperative societies through revolving fund assistance and the PPSS scheme against pending payments due from Coirfed, and sanctioned Rs 4.56 crore in working capital for 444 cooperative societies.
