Suchitra-Medchal Highway Works Delayed by Two More Years
A big road in the city of Hyderabad is being made wider so more cars can travel on it.
Workers started this project four years ago, in 2022.
They were supposed to finish in 2024, but the work is taking much longer.
The company building the road did not finish on time, so the people in charge found a new company to do the work.
Now they think it will take about two more years to finish.
Two flyovers, which are bridges that help cars cross busy roads, are only about halfway done.
People who drive on this road every day are not happy about the delay.
Some say their car rides are 20 to 30 minutes longer than before.
Others say they spend an extra hour on the road every single day.
The road has loose gravel and sand, which can make driving unsafe.
Everyone is hoping the road will be finished soon.
Flyover and widening works on the Suchitra-Medchal stretch of National Highway-44 began in 2022 under NHAI and were initially slated for completion in 2024.
NHAI says the project will now take at least another two years to complete, prolonging commuter hardship on the busy corridor.
NHAI terminated the previous construction firm's contract over schedule delays and has invited fresh tenders, with a deadline of August 10.
The Suchitra flyover is 50 percent complete, while the Medchal flyover is 65 percent complete.
Commuters report 20 to 30 minutes of added travel time daily, with some families spending an extra hour on the road due to narrow diversions, damaged service roads, and dust pollution.
