BMC Seeks Private Partners for Mumbai C&D Waste Capacity
Mumbai produces a very large amount of waste from construction and demolition work.
The city’s current plants can process only a small part of it.
The BMC wants private companies to build and run new recycling plants.
These plants could process about 2,000 tonnes of debris each day.
The debris could be turned into useful materials such as road material and paving blocks.
A new digital system would track where the waste comes from and where it goes.
GPS and geo-fencing would help officials notice trucks that leave approved routes.
The goal is to reduce illegal dumping, dust pollution and pressure on landfills.
Mumbai generates nearly 8,000 tonnes per day of construction and demolition waste.
Existing plants at Dahisar and Diaghar process only about 1,200 tonnes per day.
The BMC is seeking private partners to add around 2,000 tonnes per day of capacity.
Proposed facilities would make recycled aggregates, M-Sand, paver blocks and other materials.
Digital tracking using GPS, geo-fencing and project estimates is planned to deter illegal dumping.
