Mumbai BMC Launches Digital Construction Waste Tracking System
Mumbai’s civic body has started a digital system to track construction waste.
The system follows the waste from where it is created to an approved disposal or processing site.
Builders, contractors, transporters and other involved groups must register on the system.
Waste vehicles must use GPS tracking so officials can see their routes.
The system can identify route changes, unauthorised unloading and illegal dumping.
People who break the rules may be fined up to ₹25,000 for each vehicle and offence.
The BMC wants to increase waste-processing capacity by 2,000 tonnes each day.
Mumbai currently produces nearly 8,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste daily.
The BMC has launched the Mumbai Debris Control & Tracking System to monitor construction and demolition waste digitally.
Registration is mandatory for builders, agencies, contractors, transporters and other construction-waste stakeholders.
Vehicles carrying construction waste must use approved GPS-based Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring Systems.
Illegal dumping and other violations can result in fines of up to ₹25,000 per vehicle per offence.
The BMC plans to add 2,000 tonnes per day of processing capacity as Mumbai generates nearly 8,000 tonnes of C&D waste daily.
