Landslide in Mumbai kills two; another report says seven
One morning in Mumbai, heavy rain made a hillside very wet and weak.
A big pile of mud and rocks slid down onto a small row house called Gaushiya Chawl, where many families were sleeping.
The landslide happened very early, around 3:48 in the morning.
Sadly, two people died, and one report from the hospitals said seven people died.
Rescue workers — firefighters, police, and special disaster helpers called the NDRF — came to dig through the mud and rocks.
They wanted to find other people who might still be trapped underneath.
Two boys, Sohel and Mohamad Ansari, got hurt, but doctors say they are safe and doing fine.
The mayor of Mumbai, Ritu Tawde, came to the site and promised help for the families.
The heavy rain made the ground too loose, which is why the hillside gave way.
Everyone hoped the people still under the rubble would be found quickly and safely.
Heavy rain triggered a landslide at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Mumbai, around 3:48 am, collapsing debris onto houses while residents slept.
Most reports said two people died and several others were feared trapped, but one report citing Bhabha and Rajawadi hospitals said seven people were killed and seven injured, including two children.
The number feared trapped varied: six to eight per civic officials, four to five per police, and DCP Ganesh Shinde said three to four may still be under the debris.
Injured teenagers Sohel Ansari (18, head injury) and Mohamad Ansari (14, back injury) were stable at Bhabha Hospital in Kurla; one report also listed other injured admitted at Bhabha and Rajawadi hospitals.
Rescue operations by the fire brigade, police, BMC, NDRF and ambulance services were underway, with Mayor Ritu Tawde visiting the site, announcing financial aid and directing teams to intensify efforts.
