Andhra Pradesh Sets September 2027 Deadline for Total Literacy
Andhra Pradesh wants everyone in the state to be able to read and write by September 2027.
The government says the literacy rate has increased from 72.6% to 82.1%.
About 25 lakh people became literate during the past year.
Officials plan to help 25 lakh more people by March 2027.
They will then work with another 27 lakh people by September 2027.
Eleven government departments, elected representatives and local groups are helping with the Akshara Andhra programme.
The government is also trying to bring 1,64,821 children who are not in school back into classrooms.
Officials are working on attendance, extra classes, teacher training, student welfare and autism support.
Andhra Pradesh’s literacy rate rose from 72.6% in 2024 to 82.1%, with about 25 lakh people becoming literate in the past year.
The government aims to make another 25 lakh people literate by March 2027 and the remaining 27 lakh by September 2027.
Akshara Andhra is being coordinated by 11 government departments, with MLAs and local representatives asked to help mobilise participants.
Officials were directed to enrol all 1,64,821 identified out-of-school children; 33,000 have enrolled this year.
The review also covered attendance, student support, financial assistance, AI teacher training, autism centres, mid-day meals and honours for 192 teachers.
