Delhi, Haryana plan joint survey to stem Yamuna water loss

The Yamuna river provides drinking water to the city of Delhi.

Most of this water is sent from the neighboring state of Haryana through a special channel called the Munak Canal.

Along the way, about 30 percent of the water gets lost or wasted, which is a big problem.

Delhi receives 230 units of water, even though Haryana sends 330 units every day.

The leaders of Delhi and Haryana want to figure out where the water is being lost.

They have decided to do a joint survey, which means they will check the canals together.

Teams from the Delhi Jal Board and the Haryana Irrigation department have already met three times to plan repairs.

Their main job is to fix a part of the channel called the Delhi Sub-Branch canal.

The Water Minister also reviewed the matter at a recent meeting about cleaning the Yamuna.

Fixing the leaks will help Delhi get more of the water that is meant for it.
