Andhra Pradesh plans Yanamadurru drain capacity boost to 30,000 cusecs
There is a big canal in India called the Yanamadurru drain.
It runs through a town called Bhimavaram.
The canal carries water, but right now the water is very dirty and full of harmful chemicals.
Long ago, the water was clean enough for people to ride boats on it to reach nearby villages.
The government wants to make the canal better.
It plans to make the canal able to carry more water, from 23,000 to 30,000 cusecs.
A cusec is a way to measure how much water flows.
Many of the canal's gates, called inlets, are old and broken.
The government has already fixed 10 of them and wants to fix the rest.
It is also working on another waterway called Upputeru that flows into the Bay of Bengal.
Irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu announced plans to raise Yanamadurru drain capacity from 23,000 to 30,000 cusecs.
70 of the drain's 86 inlets are in a dilapidated condition and will be rebuilt.
The drain passes through Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.
The canal is heavily polluted with toxic chemicals, unlike in the early 1990s when boats reached nearby villages.
The coalition government rebuilt 10 inlets at a cost of Rs 3.2 crore and is developing the Upputeru rivulet.
