2.9 lakh voters deleted from Khammam district electoral rolls
Every country keeps a list of people who are allowed to vote — it is called the electoral roll.
In two districts in India, workers visited homes to check these lists.
They found some people on the list had passed away, some had moved far away, and some names were written twice.
All those names had to be removed, and altogether 2,90,639 names were taken off the list.
The workers compared the new list with a list from the year 2002 to find mistakes.
If someone's name was removed by mistake, they can show their documents and ask to be put back on the list.
The new list will be shown to everyone on August 17.
People who disagree can say so until September 16.
The final list will be ready on October 19.
More voting booths were also added so fewer people have to share one booth.
A total of 2,90,639 names were deleted from electoral rolls in erstwhile Khammam district after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) concluded.
Khammam district saw 1,57,854 deletions while Bhadradri Kothagudem district lost 1,32,785 names, accounting for 13.33 per cent of the latter's electorate.
The revision aimed to identify deceased voters, permanent migrants, duplicate entries and other ineligible names by comparing current rolls with the 2002 electoral database.
The Khammam Assembly constituency recorded the highest deletions at 80,663, of which 58,952 were permanent migrants.
The draft electoral roll will be published on August 17, with claims and objections accepted until September 16, and the final roll scheduled for October 19.
Polling stations in Khammam district increased by 19 to 1,479 under a revised norm of one station per 1,200 voters.
