MCD Continues Delhi Demolition Drive With 339 September Actions
Delhi’s civic agency is tearing down or sealing buildings that may be unsafe or built against the rules.
On September 16, it carried out 46 demolition actions and sealed 11 properties.
This brought the total number of demolition actions since September 1 to 339.
Officials also approved 12 more demolition orders across Delhi’s 12 zones.
The work took place in areas including Kardampuri, Shahdara, Shastri Park, Swaroop Nagar and Rani Bagh.
The stricter action followed the collapse of a five-storey paying guest building in Satya Niketan on September 6.
Seven people died in that collapse.
The MCD is checking paying guest buildings to see whether they meet safety and legal requirements.
The Delhi High Court described the collapse as resulting from “callous and criminal conduct.”
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi carried out 46 demolition actions and sealed 11 properties on September 16.
The actions raised the total number of demolitions since September 1 to 339.
The MCD passed 12 demolition orders during enforcement operations across all 12 municipal zones.
The drive was intensified after a five-storey paying guest building collapsed in Satya Niketan on September 6, killing seven people.
The MCD identified about 2,453 paying guest buildings housing nearly 55,000 occupants for surveys of building-rule compliance.
