The annual Pavitrotsavams festival began at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala.

It started on Sunday with a special ceremony called Pavitra Pratishta.

Priests performed traditional Vedic rituals and homams.

The temple’s processional deities were taken to the Yagashala.

They were later given a sacred bath using milk, curd, honey, sandalwood paste and turmeric.

Vedic scholars chanted special hymns called Pancha Suktas.

In the evening, the deities were carried through four streets around the temple.

Devotees gathered to receive darshan, or a chance to see the deities.
