Vidyavihar Flyover Nears Completion, Set to Open After September 8
Workers in Mumbai are almost finished building a new raised road called the Vidyavihar flyover.
A flyover lets cars drive high above the busy traffic and train tracks below.
The bridge will connect two big roads and go right over the railway tracks.
It will also have paths so people can walk to the nearby train station easily.
Only a few parts of the bridge still need to be finished.
Workers plan to complete those parts by the end of August.
Before anyone can drive on it, engineers must test the bridge to make sure it is safe and strong.
The bridge will probably open after September 8.
It is very long, about 612 metres, and wide enough for four cars side by side.
When it opens, people will cross Vidyavihar in about 10-15 minutes instead of waiting for 40-45 minutes.
Most construction on Mumbai's Vidyavihar flyover is complete, with only the concrete casting of two spans remaining, expected to finish by August 31.
The BMC will conduct load testing and other mandatory technical safety checks before the flyover opens to traffic, likely after September 8.
The 612-metre, four-lane flyover connects Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and includes a 100-metre stretch over Central Railway tracks.
The project cost escalated to Rs 178.93 crore after delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and design modifications.
Once operational, peak-hour journeys between Vidyavihar East and West are expected to drop from 40-45 minutes to around 10-15 minutes.
