New UPI MDR Raises Questions About Merchant Payment Costs

New UPI MDR Raises Questions About Merchant Payment Costs
UPI MDR Explained: Are Two In Three Shoppers Paying Over ₹2,000, Will Purchases Get Costlier? · freepressjournal.in

The government has introduced a small fee for some UPI payments above Rs 2,000.

This fee is called Merchant Discount Rate, or MDR.

Businesses, rather than shoppers, are charged the fee.

Some people worry that businesses may pass the cost on to customers.

The government says only about 4% of merchant payments will be affected.

August data showed that many UPI payments were above Rs 2,000, but it did not clearly show how many of those payments were made to merchants.

Most UPI payments to merchants were small, while person-to-person transfers generally involved larger amounts.

Small merchants and street vendors can avoid MDR on up to Rs 1 lakh in monthly payments received in personal accounts.
